Test requirements for ballistic vests, conditioned test and NIJ levels
Here is a tactical, technical explanation of NIJ 0101.06 – the most comprehensive NIJ standard for ballistic resistance in ballistic vests. The focus is higher requirements than NIJ 0101.04, stable performance over time and realistic test scenarios (moisture, wear, edges and angles).

Test methods that make 0101.06 stricter
NIJ 0101.06 introduces significantly different test methods than 0101.04. This includes water immersion before ballistic testing, as well as a conditioned durability test (tumbling/heat/moisture) that simulates everyday use.

Testing of 28 complete ballistic vest sets: edge and center zones
NIJ 0101.06 requires testing of 28 complete vest sets (front and back), including smallest and largest sizes. Each panel is tested with 6 shots in a fixed pattern to document performance – including near the edge.
- 3 shots near the edge: 2 inches (5.08 cm) from the edge.
- 3 shots in a circle: diameter 3.94 inches (10 cm).
The edge requirement is critical, because lower-quality designs have historically failed at the edge, where force can shift the material.

Trauma plates: environmental and wet testing (overview)
Trauma plates are exposed to thermal conditioning at 65°C and 80% relative humidity for 10 days, followed by cyclic exposure between -15°C and 90°C, and varying humidity. Plates are submerged in water and tested in the wet condition.
