I get that question very often — almost every week, actually. People call or write to ask whether they may buy a bulletproof vest, keep it at home, and wear it without getting into trouble with the police.
The answer is yes. A bulletproof vest is legal in Denmark. But there are a few things you need to know before you put it on and walk out the door.
What does the law actually say?
Since February 2019, there has been a requirement that you must register your vest with the police before you wear it in public places. It’s not enough to simply have it stored in a closet at home — the registration is required once you put it on and go out.
The registration itself is simple and free. You do it digitally with your MitID on the police website. It takes five minutes, and then you have the receipt in order.
The rules are set out in Executive Order No. 323 of 27 March 2019.
Who does not need to register?
If you use the vest as part of your job, you are generally exempt. This includes police officers, guards, authorized doormen and us as dealers. The rule is aimed at private individuals who wear a vest in public without an occupational reason.
What about gangs and biker gangs?
Here it’s a bit more complicated. Back in 2017, the police seized a bulletproof vest from a man with ties to Bandidos. The case went to court, and in February 2019 a verdict was handed down — the police have the right to confiscate the vest if they can document a gang-related affiliation.
So if you are a law-abiding citizen without such connections, there are no problems. If you are not, the vest is at risk of being taken from you.
Can you simply buy a bulletproof vest in Denmark?
Yes, without difficulty. There is no requirement for us as dealers to check whether you are registered or whether you have any form of permit. You order, we ship, and it is up to you to ensure registration if you intend to wear it publicly.

Not automatically. The two are not the same. A bulletproof vest is designed to stop projectiles, while a stab-proof vest is made to resist knives and spikes. Which vest does the Danish police use?
The police typically use vests in NIJ Level IIIA, which stop most handgun calibers. Their vests are integrated into the uniform and custom-made for the purpose. We offer equivalent protection levels for private individuals and commercial customers.
What is a bulletproof vest made of?
Most modern vests are made of Kevlar or UHMWPE — both are synthetic fibers that are incredibly strong and relatively lightweight. The material catches and spreads the energy from a projectile so it does not penetrate. If you want Level III or IV protection, ceramic or steel plates come into play.
Do I have to register the vest even if I just keep it at home?
No. The registration requirement only applies when you wear it in public places. If you have it stored in the closet, there is no requirement.
