I get this question quite often — almost every week, in fact. People call or write to ask if they can buy a bulletproof vest, if they can keep it at home, and if they can wear it without getting into trouble with the police.
The answer is yes. A bulletproof vest is legal in Denmark. However, there are a few things you need to be aware of before you put it on and head out the door.
What does the law actually say?
Since February 2019, there has been a requirement to register your vest with the police, before you wear it in public places. This does not apply to just having it stored in your closet at home — it is only when you put it on and go out that registration is required.
The registration itself is easy and free. You do it digitally with your MitID on the police website. It takes five minutes, and then you have the receipt in place.
The rules are established in Executive Order no. 323 of March 27, 2019.
Who does not need to register?
If you use the vest in your work, you are generally exempt. This includes police officers, security guards, licensed doormen, and us as dealers. The rule is designed for private individuals who wear the vest in public spaces without a professional reason.
What about gangs and bikers?
This is a bit more complicated. Back in 2017, the police confiscated a bulletproof vest from a man associated with the Bandidos. The case went to court, and in February 2019, a ruling was made — the police have the right to confiscate the vest if they can document a gang-related connection.
So, if you are a law-abiding citizen without such connections, there are no problems. If you are the opposite, the vest is at risk of being taken from you.
Can you just buy a bulletproof vest in Denmark?
Yes, without further ado. There are no requirements for us as dealers to check if you are registered or if you have any form of permission. You order, we ship, and then it is up to you to ensure the registration if you want to wear it publicly.

Questions we often receive
Is a bulletproof vest also stab-resistant?
Not automatically. The two things are not the same. A bulletproof vest is designed to stop projectiles, while a stab-resistant vest is made to withstand knives and spikes. What vest does the Danish police use?
The police typically use vests in NIJ Level IIIA, which stop most handgun calibers. Their vests are integrated into the uniform and custom-made for the purpose. We have similar protection levels available for private individuals and business customers.
What is a bulletproof vest made of?
Most modern vests are made of Kevlar or UHMWPE — both are synthetic fibers that are incredibly strong and relatively lightweight. The material captures and distributes the energy from a projectile so that it does not penetrate. If you want Level III or IV protection, ceramic or steel plates come into play.
Do I need to register the vest even if I just store it at home?
No. The registration requirement only applies when you wear it in public places. If you have it stored in the closet, there is no requirement.
What does registration cost?
